The Yankees won 2 out of 3 against the Rangers this past weekend, while going back-and-forth with the Orioles for 1st place in the AL East.

In game 1 of the doubleheader and series, the Bombers thrashed Texas 8-0, led by rookie catcher Austin Wells (4 RBI), who has launched himself into the ROY conversation during Jose Trevino’s injury. Carlos Rodon earned his 4th straight win, bouncing back after 5 consecutive losses.

In game 2, reigning Cy Young Gerrit Cole had a great start, pitching 6.1 innings with 10 K’s and 1 ER. But after being pulled in the 6th with the game tied 1-1 and no runners on, reliever Luke Weaver gave up 5 runs before he could get 2 outs.

A crucial out was overturned after 3rd baseman Jazz Chisholm’s foot slid off the bag, loading the bases with zero outs. The Texas onslaught included a 3 run homer by Cory Seager, his first in the Bronx, which gave the Rangers a commanding 6-1 lead. Down 8 in the 8th, Giancarlo Stanton and Chisholm hit back-to-back home runs, but New York ultimately fell short, losing 9-4.

In the last game of the series, the Yanks won 8-7 in a hard fought battle. They led 6-1 after the first 6 innings, after a commanding start from Marcus Stroman, but gave up 5 runs over the next 2, and were up just 2 runs heading into the 9th. Closer Clay Holmes managed to save the game, but had a rocky 9th inning, giving up a run and leaving 2 in scoring position due to Texas’s hustle. New York’s 3 best hitters – Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Stanton – all homered in the win.

Chisholm continues to prove his worth in his first few weeks as a Yankee, going 5-12 in the series with 3 runs. Hopefully he does not turn out to be another disappointing pickup – one who showed potential early on but never panned out.

Judge’s crusade for his 2nd career MVP keeps on rolling and he sits one dinger shy of 300. The captain is somehow more valuable to his team this year than last season, when he broke Roger Maris’s AL home run record of 61.

Things are certainly looking brighter than just a few weeks ago, but some glaring holes still remain. With yesterday’s loss to the White Sox, the Yanks have now won 10 of their past 15 and are currently favored to come out of the AL this October, something that hasn’t happened this late in the season in this decade.

Judge became the fastest player to hit 300 home runs in the 10-2 win over Chicago Wednesday night. The bad news was New York had to place Chisholm on the 10 day IL with a bruised elbow in the first game of the series.

The Yankees begin a 3 game series in Detroit Friday before coming home next Tuesday to host the Guardians. They are currently in first place ½ game in front of the Baltimore Orioles.
