The Jets played their second preseason game last Saturday, August 17th where they prevailed 15-12 against the Carolina Panthers. The preseason is a time to experiment and see what some of the lesser guys on the depth chart can do and this game was the epitome of that. The Jets did not dress one starter for this game. 2023 first-round draft selection, defensive lineman Will McDonald, from Oklahoma State University, recorded a sack in the game.
The Jets special teams did some nice things, and return man Brandon Codrington had a punt return of 31 yards in the second half, and he opened the second half with a 63-yard kickoff return. Adrian Martinez started the game for the Jets at quarterback and went 7 for 17 for 67 yards and an interception. Andrew Peasley completed 7 of 11 passes for 33 yards. Running back Israel Abanikanda rushed for a team-high 29 yards on six carries. Panthers running back Dillon Johnson ran for a game-high 83 yards on 18 carries. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, who was the number one overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft also sat the night out for Carolina.
Fourth year head coach Robert Saleh talked about the expectations coming into the 2024 season. “Guys, we’ve got a great deal of hype around us. We do. All kinds of expectations. And with expectations, we know that there’s going to be a whole lot of people, a whole lot of crows, expecting us to fall on our face. What are you doing to find that little bit more to getting closer to being a great (freeking team)? You finish practice, now what? You finish meetings, now what? Lifting, now what? A rep, now what? If we come together and we challenge ourselves to do a little bit more every day, the crows, they’ll fall by themselves
Jets host the Giants Saturday night. It hasn’t been established if Aaron Rodgers will make his debut after blowing out his Achilles Tendon 4 plays on his opening night last September.
