Four more points, a missed field goal and an extra point, could have meant a win for the New York Jets, but the score was too close and time ran out, as they lost 25-22 to the New England Patriots Sunday in Foxborough.

New York had defeated New England in September and the Patriots were without their starting quarterback, Drake Maye, for part of the game after an injury on Sunday, so a win seemed within their reach. The missed kicks by kicker Greg Zuerlein could have helped, but the Jets anticipated a higher score. “We set our sights on scoring 30 and it was right there for us,” said Quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Similar to several other games this season New York led going into halftime, but fell behind in the second half. The Jets were ahead of the Patriots 13-7 at the end of the second quarter, but lost the advantage in the fourth quarter. New York led 15-13 at halftime against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their last game, but lost 37-15.

Rodgers didn’t feel the team was lacking energy on Sunday as they returned to the game after halftime. “I thought the energy was great today,” he said. “I thought guys were engaged. I thought we played with some passion. We just execution wise, didn’t do enough offensively.”

Rodgers completed 17 of 28 passes for 233 yards and threw two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He seemed to connect better with wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who had a better average, linking with Rodgers for five of eight passes for 113-yards (22.6 average). Wilson caught five of Rodger’s nine passes for 61-yards (12.2 average) against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rodgers was sacked once on Sunday.

Maye completed three of six passes for 46 yards and Jacoby Brissett threw 15-for-24 for 132-yards. Both were sacked by Jets’ defense once.

Jets had a delay of game penalty at the end of the fourth quarter after a  touchdown as they proceeded for a two-point conversion.  Rodgers completed a pass to wide receiver Mike Williams, but was unable to make the conversion.

The Patriots scored a touchdown to close the game and prevented the Jets from scoring in the last seconds of the game.

New York Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said he would have to look at the tape to determine if he would have done anything differently in the final minute of the game.  “There are probably some calls that I could have adjusted,” he said. “It’s my job to put them in the best position to be successful and I obviously didn’t do that.”

New York dropped to a 2-6 record, now tied with the Patriots for last place after the loss in the AFC East.
