The New York Jets were relentless Sunday afternoon as they fought hard to win their first game of the regular season, defeating the Tennessee Titans 27-24 in overtime.
Tennessee could only manage field goals in the first half of the game as New York’s defense held them at bay, which gave first year quarterbacw Zach Wilson enough time to settle into the game. Wilson snapped into action before halftime and brought the same energy into the third and fourth quarters, while defense kept the Titans from scoring in OT before they claimed the week 4 victory at MetLife Stadium.

“The defense has been spectacular all season,” said Head Coach Robert Saleh. “Stats don’t do justice (to) what they have been able to accomplish. The d-line was outstanding today.”
The Jets defense stayed focused on Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry, who might soon break NFL records for rushing yards.

The Jets first made it on the scoreboard with less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter. Wilson worked the way down the field with passes and then handed-off to running bac Michael Carter who pushed his way 2-yards for the touchdown. The Jets trailed 9-7 at halftime. Ammendola had one field goal attempt in the third quarter, which was good. Wilson completed a 3-yard pass to wide receiver Jamison Crowder for a touchdown with 11:34 remaining in the fourth quarter and later heaved a 53-yard pass to wide receiver Corey Davis for the touchdown with 9:16 remaining in the quarter. The Titans, however, managed to tie the score forcing overtime. The Jets defense then kept the Titans from scoring, as the Titans missed their final field goal attempt.
“They earned that touchdown and they earned the 2-point conversion,” said linebacker C.J. Mosley about the Titans tying the score. “Kudos to our offense, coming in and driving the ball down the field.”
“I was beating myself up on that last drive,” Wilson said. “Our defense did a great job of holding them, we got a missed field goal, but I had a couple chances there to just end it.”
First year head coach Robert Saleh seemed pleased with Wilson’s improvements after a 26-0 loss to the Denver Broncos the previous week.
Wilson completed 21 of 34 passes for 297-yards and had one intercepted pass. Tannehill had 30 of 49 completed passes for 298-yards.
“The interception was unfortunate, but he made the right reads,” Saleh said. “He put the ball where it needed to be. He was aggressive when he needed to be.”
Williams was also excited about the win, because he spoke with cancer survivors prior to the game and said he hoped to get “a win” for them. He said the cause was dear to him and his brother, linebacker Quincy Williams, because their mother died from breast cancer. “It’s a huge opportunity to put a smile on other people’s faces,” he said.
The Jets hope for another win as they take on the Atlanta Falcons for Week 5 Sunday in London England.
