Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers Monday night in the MetLife Stadium.
Zach Wilson connected with receivers on several deep throws and had a better passer rating over Herbert, but ultimately the Jets needed more from offense as their record fell to 4-4. Wilson was sacked eight times and the Jets offense only managed two field goals as defense met their match on the field.
“Offense is a collective thing and it felt like there were opportunities out there to be a heck of a lot better,” Head Coach Robert Saleh said about offensive struggles. “When you continually shoot yourself in the foot – and it’s not just one person, it’s all 11, coaches included – that’s the result you are going to get.”
Wilson completed 33 of 49 passes for 263 yards and had a 80.6 passer rating. He lost the ball twice from three fumbles.
“When you’re dropping passes, you’re committing penalties, you’re not giving yourself a chance to get into a rhythm, get into a flow,” Saleh said.
Wilson did not throw any interceptions. Herbert completed 16 of 30 passes for 136 yards and had a 65.4 passer rating. He had no interceptions.
The Chargers scored in the first quarter after an 87-yard punt return by wide receiver Derius Davis and scored again after a run by running back Austin Ekeler.
Greg Zuerlein kicked a 47-yard field goal to get the Jets on the scoreboard in the second quarter. The Chargers followed up with a field goal before the end of the quarter and the Jets trailed 17-3 at halftime. Zuerlein kicked a 46-yard field goal for the Jets in the third quarter. The Jets did not score again.
One well known Jets defensive player returned to MetLife Stadium Monday night.
Former Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was honored at halftime and received his Pro Football Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence.
The Jets next take on the Raiders in Las Vegas. Sauce Gardner said he wants to perfect his craft before the next game.
“Stuff I already work on, just keep doing that consistently,” he said.
Zach Wilson said there’s a lot of things he wants to work on. “I want to get more completions, get the ball out of my hands for our playmakers, let them make plays,” Wilson said.
“He is a baller and for me it’s nothing I need to say to Zach, he knows there is plays that we all leave on the field, and he’s got my back, I got his,” said Wilson’s main passing target wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
Garrett led Jets receivers catching seven of 13 passes for 80 yards. Garrett lost the ball once from a forced fumble.
“I am going to make sure to clean that up because that is inexcusable,” he said.
Saleh hopes to avoid “self-inflicted” wounds and make a quick turnaround before Sunday.
