The New York Jets fell to the Miami Dolphins in a 32-26 overtime loss, eliminating their playoff chances. The last time the Jets made the playoffs was the 2010 season, when head coach Rex Ryan and quarterback Mark Sanchez led them to the AFC Championship game on Jan. 23, 2011.
The last three games this season New York has lost after having a lead at the start of the fourth quarter. New York’s defense held Miami to only field goals in the second and third quarters, but the Dolphins scored a touchdown, a two-point conversion and field goal in the fourth quarter and another touchdown in overtime, to win the game.
“Just got to look at the offense, that’s what we can control,” Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said about the loss. “We had our chances to get to 30 today, didn’t do it. That’s why we lost.”
Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes for 339 yards and threw one touchdown and zero interceptions. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw 33-of-47 for 331 yards and two touchdowns and zero interceptions for the Dolphins.
Anders Carlson kicked a 28-yard field goal to get New York on the scoreboard. They trailed 6-3 at the end of the first quarter. Isaiah Davis rushed for the Jets’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. New York went up 10-9. The Dolphins went up three with a field goal. Carlson’s field goal at the end of the quarter gave the Jets the lead, but the Dolphins matched their field goal and led 15-13 at halftime. Rodgers passed to Davante Adams in the third quarter to retake the lead. Carlson added three more points with a field goal as New York led 23-15 at the end of the third quarter. Carlson scored another field goal before overtime.
“We have a strong connection within that locker room amongst the fellas,” said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich about the focus going forward. “They have a strong brotherhood. The best thing you can do is honor that brotherhood by going out there and playing your butt off and playing the best brand of football.”
The Jets travel back to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend.
