Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts has a strong team around him, in addition to his receivers, that are prepared to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX Sunday.
Both teams shared some of their plans and strategies with the media on February 6th as they moved closer to the big game. Eagles guard and tackle Brett Toth and punter Braden Mann shared what their jobs are like as part of Philadelphia’s offense, while Kansas City weighed in on what it’s like at the line of scrimmage.
“You just have to trust in your preparation, it’s what got us here,” Toth said about when nervous feelings come up. “Build your confidence from the guys around you, as well as the preparation, and just know once the first snap happens it’s football. We’ve been doing this since we were kids.”
Toth played in 11 games with the Eagles in 2021. An ACL injury left him sidelined in 2022 ahead of Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12, 2023. He played three games with the Carolina Panthers in 2024 before re-signing with the Eagles. Toth said one teammate he gets confidence from is Hurts.
“I just encourage everyone to stick to the routine, to stick to the script of what they’ve been doing to get to this point,” Hurts said Thursday prior to the Super Bowl LIX. “You want to try and treat it just as you treat it every other game, every other moment.”
Toth shared what it’s been like blocking for Hurts.
“He instills a sense of confidence in everyone around him,” Toth said. “He’s always going to find a way to make a play. It also helps having 26 (Saquon Barkley) back there as well.”
Part of Toth’s readiness comes from his conditioning received at the United States Military Academy West Point, where he graduated and played for the Army Black Knights football team.
“You’ll never forget having to run five miles every other morning for training,” he said. “It just kind of gives you the mindset, when it comes to adversity to always persevere and see everything as an opportunity to get better.”
It’s commonly said ‘you don’t have to get ready if you stay ready’. Mann, his fellow offense member, shared what it is like during down time moments.
“If we are on defense, just trying to relax and enjoy being part of it, enjoy the game,” he said. “If we are on offense, I’ll catch a lot of snaps from Rick (Lovato) my snapper, if we’re in field goal range holding a lot of snaps for Jake (kicker Jake Elliott). So just trying to keep occupied and keep warm some how.”
Team members of the Chiefs answered questions about what they anticipate against Philly’s offense.
“Jalen can do it all,” said defensive end George Karlaftis about the biggest challenge going against Hurts. “Obviously the stuff he can do with his legs and he can make all the throws on the field, so he’s very dangerous.”
The offense’s efforts could create more opportunities for Hurts and help keep Mann off the field.
