Quarterback Jalen Hurts exhibited resilience and excellence as he led the Philadelphia Eagles through injuries to reach Super Bowl LIX.
Hurts returned to his quarterback role for the playoffs after sustaining a concussion Dec. 22 against the Washington Commanders. He soon suffered a left knee injury during the Divisional Round playoff game, yet it wasn’t enough to stop him.
“It’s just been a mentality that’s engrained in me,” he said about his injuries and control on Feb. 4 in New Orleans. “That’s how I’ve always carried myself. I’ve always prided myself in learning from the highs and lows because they all come with it.“
The road to the playoffs started and ended for the Eagles at home at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia clinched the No. 2 seed in the NFC and faced the Green Bay Packers for the wild-card playoff round on Jan. 12. Hurts threw two touchdown passes and completed 13 of 21 for 131 yds to lead Philadelphia to a 22-10 victory over the Packers. His targets were running back Saquon Barkley who had 25 carries for 119 yds; wide receiver DeVonta Smith with 4 receptions for 55 yards; and tight end Dallas Goedert who had four receptions for 47 yards. He found success with touchdown passes to Goedert and to wide receiver Jahan Dotson who caught one reception for 11 yds.
Next the Eagles faced off against the Los Angeles Rams for a cold snowy and slippery matchup for the divisional round playoff Jan. 19. Hurts was sacked seven times and including once in the third-quarter resulting in injury to his left knee. However, he finished with 15 of 20 passes for 128 yds and led the team to a 28-22 win. Hurts rushed for one touchdown, Barkley rushed for two touchdowns downs and kicker Jake Elliott found success for 10 points.
Jan. 26 would bring the Eagles some revenge for the injured quarterback as they fought for 55-23 win against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game. Hurts and Barkley each rushed for three touchdowns, running back Will Shipley rushed for one touchdown; and Hurts found wide receiver A.J. Brown for a touchdown. Elliott added seven points.
“It’s a blessing to be here,” Hurts said. “As I said you put a lot of hard work in for moments like this.”
Hurts now faces the next hurdle Feb. 9 as he leads the Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
