A new clothing line celebrating the legacy of Tupac Shakur, one of hip-hop’s most enduring icons, has arrived just in time for the holidays. Actively Black, a Black-owned apparel brand, launched its limited-edition Tupac X Actively Black collection on Christmas Day. The collection, crafted in collaboration with the Shakur Estate, draws inspiration from Shakur’s posthumous poetry album, The Rose That Grew From Concrete, released in 2020.
The multi-piece collection features hoodies and T-shirts adorned with custom artwork and imagery from Tupac’s archives. It reflects the poet and activist’s indelible influence on culture, creativity, and Black pride. Actively Black’s founder, Lanny Smith, said the collaboration held personal significance. “Tupac’s music had a profound impact on me. His passionate delivery and commitment to the Black Pride movement are incredibly inspiring,” Smith noted in a statement.
Actively Black’s partnership with the Shakur Estate builds on the brand’s growing portfolio of high-profile collaborations. Earlier this month, the company launched a Disney-inspired Mufasa: The Lion King capsule collection ahead of the film’s release. This followed its successful collaboration with Marvel Studios in 2022 for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The brand’s focus on celebrating Black culture and excellence continues to resonate with its audience.
The Shakur Estate emphasized that the apparel line is a tribute to Tupac’s enduring impact. “This collaboration celebrates Tupac’s profound influence on culture, creativity, and artistry,” the estate said in a statement. The poetry-inspired designs serve as a testament to Shakur’s ability to speak to the struggles and resilience of Black communities, a theme central to his life’s work.
Tupac Shakur, a figure who transcended music and became a cultural touchstone, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. Yet, his legacy remains alive through projects like this one, which channel his artistry into mediums that continue to inspire. Actively Black’s collection stands as a vibrant reminder of the power of Tupac’s words and the enduring relevance of his message.
