Yankee legend CC Sabathia has been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot! The 6’6″, 300-pound titan was nearly unstoppable from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. With his lovable personality and stern dedication to winning, he has left a lasting mark on the game of baseball and its fans.
Signed as a coveted free agent, Sabathia played 11 years in pinstripes, helping the Yankees capture their 27th championship in 2009 in his first year with the club. As the ace of the rotation, The Big Dub was crucial to the team’s success, and was lights out during the postseason run, going 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA and winning the ALCS MVP.
Before coming to the Bronx, CC played eight years for the Cleveland Indians, where he had some of his best campaigns. In 2007, Sabathia won the AL Cy Young Award, and continued his elite mound work into 2008, when he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in the middle of the season. In 2008, CC became the first player in history to lead both the AL and NL in shutouts.
Some fans and writers alike were surprised Sabathia got into Cooperstown on his first try, while others see it as a testament to his dominance. Retiring with over 250 wins and 3,000 strikeouts is something only 15 pitchers in league history have accomplished. Aside from Justin Verlander, CC is the only player to do so while playing the majority of their career in the 21st century.
