STRASBOURG — The Greens in the European Parliament agreed to start “fact-finding” talks with the 5Star Movement that could lead to the Italian governing party joining their bloc, according to a statement.
Philippe Lamberts, the co-leader of the group, announced earlier this month that his group is ready to talk to the 5Star Movement now that their coalition with the far-right League party in Italy is over.

The Italian government is now a coalition between the 5Stars and the center-left Democratic Party, bringing the self-styled anti-establishment 5Stars closer to the political mainstream.
The 5Stars are currently not part of any bloc in the Parliament and have 14 MEPs, so a deal would see the Greens get more influence, more speaking time and access to more financial resources. The Italians used to be part of the European Freedom and Direct Democracy group alongside UKIP, although some 5Star members did not feel at ease with the Brexit champion.
