It started out as another disaster waiting to happen for the New York Football Giants when they traveled to Cleveland to play the Browns. A week after not giving up a touchdown to the Washington Commanders in the 21-18 loss (Washington converted 7 field goals) the Giants were looking for their first win of the 2024-25 season. Big Blue found themselves behind the 8 ball before the offense got a chance to step on the field. New York would receive the opening kick and watched as running back Eric Gray start up field. He gets blasted by Browns cornerback Tony Brown coughing up the ball with Cleveland recovering the fumble at the Giants 24-yard line. 1 play later, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson connects with wide receiver Amari Cooper for a 24-yard touchdown pass taking a quick 7-0 lead. Both teams would go 3 and out on their next possessions when it looked like the Giants would dig a deeper hole for themselves the third time they got the ball.
Coming off 2 sub-par performances, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (24-34, 236 yards, 2 td’s) begins the next drive from the their own 19. Looking for tight end Theo Johnson on a short pass attempt, Jones gets intercepted by safety Ronnie Hickman which would have given the Browns the ball and a chance to put more points on the board. Fortunately for the Giants, Browns cornerback Greg Newsome ll was flagged for roughing the passer negating the interception. Brown would then move the team 81 yards in 13 plays ending in a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Devin Singletary tying the game at 7. For the second week in a row, wide receiver Malik Nabers showed why he was selected #1 by the Giants.
Nabers caught 2 second quarter touchdowns (8 catches, 78 yards) giving Big Blue a 21-7 lead going into halftime. Said Nabers after, “it was great to put up that performance in the first half,” he began. Nabers was not happy about the second half as they were shut out. “We got to do that in the second half as well.”
The Giants defense pretty much kept Watson (21 of 37, 196 yards, 2 td’s) in check and stuffed their running game giving up only 69 total yards. Said head coach Brian Daboll on his team’s defensive performance, “defensively they are a good football team and l thought we got into a rhythm and made some plays early in the game. Proud of those guys.”
It will be a short week for the New York Giants as they host division rival Dallas Cowboys Thursday night in prime time. The Cowboys (1-2) have lost 2 in row (both home games) as they fell at home to the Baltimore Ravens 28-25. Dallas has dominated the Giants winning 6 in a row and 13 of the last 14 games.
Said Daboll of the game, “it’s a short week and we’ve got not much time to get ready. So that’s where my focus is. Different players, different schemes, making sure we’re prepared.”
