If you left it up to Daniel Jones and the New York Football Giants, they would play the Washington Football Team every week. Big’s Blue’s only victory in 20202 came in week 6 at MetLife Stadium (20-19) when Washington head coach Ron Rivera decided to go for the 2-point conversion instead of kicking a game tying extra point that would have sent the game into overtime. This past Saturday at FedEx Field, the Giants were looking to extend their win streak against their division to five straight games. Jones looked to take them down for the 4th time in his young career. By games end, both streaks would be intact.
New York was without veteran wide receiver Golden Tate lll who did not travel with the team and was put on the scout team last week. He was also suspended for the game as he violated the team personal policy. It gave rookie wide receiver Austin Mack an opportunity to showcase his talents. Jones (23-34, 212 yards, 1td) targeted Mack 5 times, who hauled in 4 passes for 72 yards. Said Jones, “Austin did a great job stepping up and made a lot of plays for us. He’s someone you can trust to be in the right spot. I certainly have a lot of trust in him.’’
While the defense dominated the first half, getting out to a 20-3 lead, New York forced a fumble added an interception and made Washington punt 3 times. Said head coach Joe Judge, “for us, the whole message was finish.” Finishing has been a major problem for his team in the previous 8 games. Aside from the blowout by the 49ers, the Giants were in the position to come away victories only to be betrayed by turnover. They finished the game without turning the ball over once.
Washington’s starting quarterback Kyle Allen was replaced in the first quarter after an unintentional leg whip by Jabrill Peppers. In comes veteran Alex Smith, (24-32, 325 yards, 1 td, 3int’s), who suffered a gruesome leg injury that nearly resulted in his leg being amputated below the knee. He engineered a comeback closing the gap to 23-20 the first time they touched the ball in the final quarter. Both teams would punt the next two times they got the ball. Smith had the ball on their own 28 with 1:48 when his final interception iced the game for New York. From the shotgun, Smith looks for Terry McLaurin across the middle. Logan Ryan steps in front for the int. The Rutgers alumni had a emotional week as his wife had emergency surgery last Tuesday. Ashley complained of stomach discomfort and was taken to the emergency roon. Doctors found out she was pregnant and the eggs were implanted in her fallopian tube which ruptured. Surgery contained the bleeding. Said Ryan, my kids are OK, my wife is recovering well, she’s OK.”
Both teams will enter week 10 with same record, 2-7. The Giants host the first place Philadelphia Eagles while Washington travels to Detroit. Dallas fell to Pittsburgh (the only undefeated team) dropping their record to 2-7 as well. The Cowboys have a bye Sunday. If the Giants can come away with a win, they would be 2 games out of first having won 3 division games.
