Benched Tua Will Start Against JetsPhoto: Special to the NY BeaconBy Shara Talia TaylorOnce again, a positive start for the New York Jets quickly changed as they lost their lead to the Los Angeles Chargers at the end of the first quarter last Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA.
The 34-28 loss dropped their record to 0-10. Early pressure by Jets defense was effective, but the offense failed to take advantage of those moves fast enough to come away with their first wi of 2020.
“We had some good momentum going, ” said Jets Head Coach Adam Gase said. “We get a turnover, we throw a pick six. Then, we couldn’t do anything on offense.”

The Jets took the lead at the beginning of the game. Quarterback Joe Flacco, who once again played in place of injured quarterback Sam Darnold, handed off to RB La’Mical Perine for a 5-yard touchdown run. The Chargers had the ball with about 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. Jets safety Marcus Maye forced Chargers reciever Keenan Allen to fumble and the ball was recovered by Jets safety Ashtyn Davis. Shortly afterwards Flacco’s pass intended for wide receiver Jamison Crowder was intercepted by Chargers cornerback Tevaughn Campbell who scored a touchdown. The Jets were behind the remainder of the game despite positive efforts by defense.
The Jets defense put pressure on the Chargers offense early and intensified in the second half. New York had 25 combined tackles and assists in the first half of the game and 81 total by the end of the game. Gang Green came away with three sacks. Chargers defense totaled 43 combined tackles and assists and made one sack. “I feel like we did a decent job shutting down that rushing attack,” said Jets DE Henry Anderson. “But we just got to continue up front to get after the quarter back and pressure him and make his life a little bit more difficult so that he doesn’t have time to find those guys down field.”
The New York offense did not take advantage of opportune moves made by defense. Kicker Sam Ficken missed extra points. Although the game was close with 34-26 score and 2:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Jets were unable to make a comeback due to incomplete passes. The Chargers the ball back and executed an intentional safety leaving only one second on the clock.
“They really have all the ability in the world there to hold for as long as they want to and run as much clock off that way,” Flacco said. “We had a play drawn up on the sideline if we got the ball back, but, obviously, when they did that it made it tough for us to do that. Your best chance kind of becomes Braxton (Berrios) returning a kick. Flacco had 15 of 30 completed passes for 205 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had 37 of 49 completed passes for 366 yds and 3 touchdowns.
Jets running Frank Gore led offense with 15 carries for 61 yds. Gore said he tries to show younger players how to work hard despite the circumstance. “I’ve been in this league for 16 years and I can’t sell these young guys short,” Gore said. “Whenever my number gets called, I try my best to let them know I’m here and I’m here trying to get a win with them.”
