An 18-year-old teenager, Lawan Jones Jr., has been charged with first-degree murder after turning himself in to authorities in South Florida for the fatal shooting of Keith Bryan Poole, his girlfriend’s father. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred on August 19 in Pompano Beach, where deputies responded to a shooting call on Northeast 28th Street. Upon arrival, first responders found 44-year-old Poole suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The tragic incident reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between Jones and Poole. According to witnesses, the conflict began after Poole discovered social media posts by Jones that he found inappropriate, particularly one where Jones was holding a firearm. Poole confronted Jones, telling him that such behavior was unacceptable in his home and that he would need to leave. Angered by the confrontation, Jones allegedly threatened Poole, saying he could have his friends “take care of the problem.” The argument escalated until Jones drew a firearm from his satchel and shot Poole twice before fleeing the scene with Poole’s 17-year-old daughter, Jessie.
Two days later, Jones surrendered to deputies and was booked into jail without bond. Jessie was safely located and reunited with her family. Poole, who had taken Jones into his home after the teenager lost his parents, was remembered by friends and family as a devoted father and a compassionate man who opened his doors to an orphaned teen. The community expressed their grief and disbelief on social media, mourning Poole’s death and questioning how such kindness could be met with such violence. A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to support Poole’s family, who are now grappling with both emotional and financial hardships in the wake of his untimely death.
