Very few athletes have transformed their sport the way Serena Williams has.
A tennis grand slam occurs when a player wins all four of the major tennis tournaments: Australia, France, Britain, and the United States. Serena Williams achieved 23 total Grand Slam singles titles in her career, starting at the age of 17 in 1999. The 38-year-old’s remarkable record proves why she is often called the “Greatest of all time”.

Williams dominated women’s tennis from 2010-2019. 12 of Williams’ Grand Slam singles titles were over the last decade. No other woman had more than three during this time frame. Williams was ranked #1 for 196 weeks and won 89.3% of her matches.
One of Williams incredible comebacks was in 2018, less than a year after having a baby when she entered the finals at Wimbledon.
Williams started a new tennis season and decade with a victory, winning the women’s singles final Sunday at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.
Because of all of her accomplishment on the court and the personal issues she has had to overcome off the court, the New York Beacon recognizes Serena Williams as the Female Athlete of the Decade.
