A tragic hit-and-run in Miami Beach claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman, sparking outrage over both the incident and the response from a nearby police officer. Esmat Ahmed Ibrahim Khedr was riding her bicycle along Washington Avenue on April 28 when she was struck by a blue Ford Bronco. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Demarcus Cortez Harrington, sped away, leaving Khedr critically injured near the police station, while bystanders desperately sought help.

Witnesses flagged down Officer Edward Cavalie, expecting immediate assistance. Instead, Cavalie shockingly refused to file a report or offer aid, telling the bystanders to go inside the station and handle it themselves. He then drove off, leaving Khedr in the street. Surveillance footage later confirmed Cavalie’s inaction, which prompted Miami Beach Police to fire him and launch an internal investigation.

Harrington, with a long criminal record dating back to 2004, was arrested days later and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones condemned Cavalie’s negligence, emphasizing that his behavior violated department standards. Harrington remains in custody, with a court appearance scheduled for October, as Khedr’s family mourns their devastating loss.
