A prestigious private school in South Florida, known for its diverse student body and rigorous academic standards, is facing backlash after a student was caught on video making a racist remark. The student, a member of the school’s founding family, was swiftly removed from campus following the emergence of the footage, which circulated widely among students and on social media. The incident has reignited conversations about race, accountability, and the influence of leadership in educational institutions.
The student, whose father serves as the president of American Heritage Schools, appeared in a short clip looking directly into the camera and using an anti-Black slur. “I f***king hate (the N-word),” he said in the video, which was recorded and shared among classmates. The footage quickly led to an uproar among parents and students at the Plantation campus, where concerns over the school’s culture and leadership have since intensified.
In response, the administration released a statement confirming that the student had been expelled and would not be allowed back. “American Heritage Schools can confirm that the student in question has been removed from campus and will not be allowed to return to the school,” it read. The statement emphasized the institution’s commitment to fostering “a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all students” and stressed that its policies apply uniformly, “regardless of the individual involved.”
Despite the school’s decisive action, some parents remain unsettled. While many expressed their dismay privately, others took to social media, questioning how such language could emerge from the family at the helm of the institution. “These kids’ parents are teaching Black children at American Heritage,” one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Others wondered whether the school’s leadership had cultivated an atmosphere that allowed such behavior to take place.
American Heritage Schools, which operates two campuses in South Florida and enrolls over 4,200 students, markets itself as a top-tier institution, boasting advanced science labs, a mock courtroom, and an elite athletics program. With a student body representing roughly 70 countries, the school prides itself on its diverse environment. However, the incident has left some questioning whether diversity alone is enough—and whether leadership must do more to ensure that its values are reflected in both policy and practice.
