Attempted Murder, Machete, Supermarket, Brazil
In a shocking display of violence, a supermarket manager in Sinope, Brazil, was attacked by the husband of a disgruntled employee. The attack, which was captured on surveillance video, left the manager with injuries to his head and ear.
The manager, Claudio dos Santos, 40, was talking on his cellphone when he was struck from behind with a shovel by Danielson Paiva, 29. Paiva’s wife had reportedly complained to him about dos Santos, and Paiva confronted dos Santos at the supermarket, waiting for an opportunity to attack.
Bystanders watched in horror as the attack unfolded. Dos Santos said that his cellphone, which shattered inside his ear, may have saved his life. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.
Paiva was arrested and charged with attempted murder. A judge ordered him to be held in pretrial detention.
The Machado Supermarket, where the attack took place, released a statement saying that they have opened an independent investigation into the incident.
“We reinforce our commitment to the respect, safety and well-being of our employees and customers, values that have always guided our actions,” the statement read.
