The New York Jets season could be summed up in one series. Trailing 13-3, Gang Green forces a turnover as Miami’s running back Patrick Laird after gaining 10 yards, gets hit by cornerback Janoris Jenkins. Linebacker Neville Hewitt picks it up and scampers 17 yards to the Dolphins 26-yard line.. A touchdown puts the Jets right back in the game. But these are the Jets we’re talking about. After running back Frank Gore gains 2-yards, Darnold is thrown for an 8-yard sack. He then completes a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Denzel Mims who comes up 1-yard short of the first down. Head coach Adam Gase decides to go for the first down and watches as Gore is stopped short of the first down. Said Gase about the Miami defense, “they’re tough. They do a good job of mixing up their fronts.”
Darnold returned after missing 4 of his last 6 games with strained right shoulder. He drove the team down the field the very first time they touched the ball moving them 65 yards in 9 plays ending in a Sergio Castillo 38-yard field goal. It was all downhill from there. Darnold finished his day 16 of 27, 197 yards and 2 interceptions. After the field goal, they punted the next two times they had the ball. Down 13-3, after getting to the Dolphins 11-yard line, Castillo misses a 29-yard field goal.
With the ball on the Miami 36-yard line, Darnold drops back, rolls out right looking for wide receiver Jamison Crowder. Cornerback Nik Needham picks off the pass killing the drive. “I made a bad decision. I could have just put it more toward the sideline,” said Darnold.
Meanwhile, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick continued to haunt his ex-team as he filled in for first round draft choice Tua Tagovailoa who was sidelined with a thumb sprain on his throwing hand. Fitz finished 24-29, 257 yards and 2 touchdowns as the team improved its record to 7-4.
Only two teams in NFL history have gone 0-16. The first, the Detroit Lions in 2008 and the Cleveland Browns in 2017. The Jets are on pace to become the third team. The host the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday who were embarrassed by the Atlanta Falcons 43-6.
Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins talked about the possibility of losing every game this year. “That’s a thing that no player, no coach, no staff ever wants to be a part of. No one wants to go 0-16. That’s something no one in this league wants to do. So, we’re going to keep fighting to try and change that.”
