There was a question as to whether or Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry would play when the Knicks hosted them Wednesday night. Curry was dealing with a sore right ankle. As he always does when he comes to Madison Square Garden, he put on a pre-game shooting exhibition for the crowd hitting shots from all over the court. Curry’s health might have been a factor to start the game as he only scored 6 points. Teammate Brandon Podziemski chipped in 8. Knicks guard Jalen Brunson scored 9. As New York took a 26-25 first quarter lead.
The Knicks would take a 55-47 halftime lead as their defense on allowed Curry only 2 more points. Brunson had 17 points with teammate OG Anunoby adding 12. Then, Curry woke up. He scored 14 points and finished the third quarter with 22 points as Golden State outscored New York 35-26 taking a 1-points lead 83-82.
The Knicks shooting woes carried over to the final quarter as they were outscored 32-21 in 114-102 loss. It didn’t help that New York shot a putrid 8 of 33, 24% from 3-point land. Curry led the Warriors and Anunoby led the Knicks with 29 points.
Said Curry after winning for 12th time at the Garden, “it’s Madison Square Garden. It speaks for itself. It just has great unique authentic basketball energy and the fans are unreal. For us in the Western Conference we get one chance here, so we try to make the most of it.”
Anunoby talked about the team having a horrible shooting night from 3-point land. “Definitely want to get more threes up and we all shoot with confidence. We all encourage each other to get them up. Just not turning down good ones and settling for a harder shot.”
The Knicks go on their annual west coast trip starting with the Lakers Thursday night, the Clippers Friday night, Sacramento next Monday night and finish in Portland next Wednesday.
Golden State are at Barclays Center Thursday night.
