Winnie Dortch, a reporter for WOIO 19 News in Cleveland, is recovering from serious injuries after being shot in an alleged domestic violence incident on the morning of October 7. The attack, which occurred in Lakewood, Ohio, has left Dortch hospitalized and undergoing multiple surgeries, with more ahead as she works toward recovery.
The shooting unfolded just before 8 a.m. when Lakewood police responded to a call about an argument near Clifton Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman on the sidewalk, both appearing to have suffered gunshot wounds. Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene, and 34-year-old Bryant Carter was pronounced dead. Dortch, who was also found at the scene, was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery.
Family members are now asking for prayers and support as Dortch, a single mother to her four-year-old daughter, Kaelie, faces a long recovery process. A GoFundMe campaign organized by Precious Harris highlights the severity of Dortch’s injuries and the extensive treatments she will need. “Winnie’s enthusiasm to reunite with her Chicago community and continue her career as a news reporter was something she eagerly looked forward to,” the fundraiser reads, noting that she had recently planned to move back to Chicago to join WGN9 News.
WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair expressed shock and sadness over the attack, releasing a statement the morning of the incident. “This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack. She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries. Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community,” Sinclair said.
As Dortch recovers physically and emotionally, her family is holding on to hope. “We are immensely grateful to God for sparing her life,” her relatives said in a statement. They believe that she will emerge from this experience stronger than ever. Contributions from the public will help cover daily expenses and provide support for Dortch and her daughter as they navigate this challenging period.
The Cleveland news community has rallied around Dortch, sending well wishes and support for the beloved journalist during her recovery. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
