Only one team has made it to the Super Bowl 3 times in a row. In fact, they made it to the Super Bowl 4 consecutive years in a row. Unfortunately for the Buffalo Bills, they lost all them. Now here comes the Kansas City Chiefs looking to do what no NFL team has ever done: Win 3 straight Super Bowls. Not even the great teams of Chuck Knoll and Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman and more recently Bill Belichick and Tom Brady could win three in row.
What makes the what the Chiefs more impressive in what they are trying to accomplish is the competition they have had to face over the last three years. The AFC is stacked with teams that have All Star quarterbacks. The Ravens have 2-time MVP Lamar Jackson. The Buffalo Bills have Josh Allen who put up career numbers this year despite losing key offensive players. Cincinnati has quarterback Joe Burrow who rallied the team to win their last five games, only to come up short missing the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Kansas City were ripe for the taking as they did not breeze Through the regular season although their record showed otherwise. They finished the season winning 15 games and losing only 2. the last loss was insignificant as they lost to a Denver Broncos team that was playing against the Chiefs “B” team.
They began their championship defense taking out the Houston Texans 23-14 in the divisional round as they earned a first round bye. Mahomes game was pedestrian as he completed 16 of 25 passes for 177 yards and 1 touchdown. Next was the Buffalo Bills and Allen who went into the game confident after taking out the Ravens and Jackson. Allen and the Bills had never won a playoff game against Kansas City. That trend continued with the Chiefs coming away with a 32-29 win getting them to their third straight Super Bowl appearances.
The Philadelphia Eagles will have something to say about whether or not Kansas City will make history. The Eagles have been guided by running back Saquon Barkley who shredded defenses all seasons. Barkley gained 205 yards on 26 carries and 2 touchdowns against the Rams. He followed that up 118 yards on 15 carries with 3 touchdown so against the Washington Commanders. Eagles much maligned quarterback Jalen Hurts came into the Washington game with a tender knee. He put that question to a rest as he ran for 3 touchdowns.
It has never been done before. Just when you think the Chiefs will be taken out, they find a way to win. The Eagles have been counted out more times than Rocky. They just find a way to get off the canvas.
