Saul Alvarez continues to give new meaning to the phrase “making history” as his career progresses. Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada he became the first fighter in the history of his boxing rich country to hold all four titles in the 168-pound division following an 11th-round KO of Caleb Plant.
Better known as Canelo, who picked up Boxing to defend himself from constant ridicule during his childhood hometown of Guadalajara for his appearance, now has adults and children alike in every corner of the globe shadow boxing as if they were ‘cinnamon’ or Canelo in English. Undisputed champion, a 57-1-2 record, and with a recent purse of $40 million dollars from Saturday’s title fight, Alvarez’s only issue is what’s next for the pound-for-pound king of Boxing?
Caleb Plant was the man who stood between Canelo and his main goal of being an undisputed champion, but what man now stands in the way of the next box to check off as he puts together a career resume that will land him in the Hall of Fame in Canastona? There’s a couple of very interesting names out there for the taking as Al Haymon has finally shown the ability to make negotiations work with other promoter’s fighters.
Enter David Benavidez and Arthur Beterbiev solidly into the mix. Two incredible contenders and champions under the PBC umbrella whom Canelo could gain career clout from immediately. Benavidez is an extremely formidable opponent who has an attacking style with vicious combinations who could counteract the walkdown style of Canelo. Beterbiev who would be only the second 175-pounder the great Alvarez has ever taken on, causes issues with his ability to take punishment and his punching power. Both Benavidez and Beterbiev are much bigger but Canelo has never shown a problem with handling height reach or weight differences.
A clash with David Benavidez would be a fan favorite in what could be an instant classic. Both are hardly feel each other out type fighters and if activity is what you are looking for in a 12-round bout, this would be your ideal date for an upcoming fight night. Pencil in David Benavidez on Canelo Alvarev’s schedule for 2022.
