The New York Knicks welcomed back their captain Jalen Brunson this past Sunday night when they hosted the Pheonix Suns. Brunson had missed close to a month after sustaining an ankle injury against the Los Angeles Lakers. Brunson scored his first basket with 8:35 in the first quarter. He did not return until the 6-minute mark of the second quarter and gave the Knicks a 47-34 lead after converting 2 free throws. Brunson would play 34 minutes, finishing with a modest 15 points. The night clearly belonged forward OG Anunoby in the 112-98 win. OG was stellar from the floor, converting 13 of 17 field goals, connecting on 6 of 8 3-pointers. In taking the 17-point third quarter lead, Anunoby scored 19 points.
Pheonix was without their star Kevin Durant who was out with a sprained left ankle. Guard Kevin Booker did all he could scoring a game high 40 points but only two other players (Bradley Beal 16 and Grayson Allen 15) would score in double figures. Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 22 and 19 points.
Brunson evaluated his performance afterward. “Could be better, could be worse. Definitely a lot of room for improvement on my end.” This was the most games he missed due to an injury. Said head coach Tom Thibodeau, “usually what happens when a player comes back is he needs to get a feel, and usually there’s a play or two where he’ll be tested a little bit. And then once he realizes he’s good, he takes off. I thought in the second half, there was a different gear to him.”
OG went on a tear in the third quarter as he connected on 5 3-pointers. On his third quarter outburst, Anunoby said, “l don’t think I’m in a zone. l think I’m always capable.” Anunoby has scored 20 or more points in 10 straight games.
The Knicks hosted the Boston Celtics this past Tuesday night before the division leading Cleveland Cavaliers came to Madison Sqaure Garden Friday night. They have played both teams 3 times, losing all of the games. Said Towns on the upcoming games, “it’s always a good test when you get to play good teams, but you know we got to keep worrying about ourselves and keep figuring out ways we can get better and how we can be a more complete team coming into the playoffs.”
