The enigmatic career of wide receiver Antonio Brown took another bizarre turn when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium last Sunday afternoon. Gang Green was a double-digit underdog against the Bucs and quarterback Tom Brady. The Jets came out swinging from the very beginning. Wide receiver Braxton Berrios helped the team jump out to a 14-7 lead with 2 touchdowns. The first, a 1-yard run and the 2nd pulling in a 9-yard pass from rookie quarterback Zach Wilson. The Jets extended the lead to 24-10 after a 1-yard run by running back Ty Johnson. Prior to that, Brown did something that had never been seen in a football stadium or in any other sport for that matter.

In the third quarter Brown is seen having words with wide receiver teammate Mike Evans on the sideline. Shortly after, Brown would take off his uniform and shoulder pads. He would then take off his undershirt and gloves throwing them into the stand. Brown then did jumping jacks in the back of the end zone before sprinting into the team’s locker room. Meanwhile, Brady would engineer a comeback with the help of a shady offensive call by the Jets.
Tampa would score the final 17 points in the come from behind 28-24 win. Surrounded by a Ryan Succop field goal (27 yards) Brady connects with tight end Cameron Brate (4 yards) to get them within 7 (24-17) before the Jets would shoot themselves in the foot.
Wilson moved the team all the way down to the Bucs 7-yard line. The worst they could have done was kick a field goal. Instead, on 4th and 2, Wilson attempts a quarterback sneak and is stuffed at the line of scrimmage. As he has done in the past, Brady takes the team 93 yards in 9 plays capping the drive with a 33-yard touchdown to wide receiver Cyril Grayson. Said first year Jets head coach of the call, “it was supposed to be an end around to Berrios. Wilson had option to sneak if certain look. It was poor communication by the coaching staff.”
That notwithstanding, all the news centered on the action of Brown. Bucs head coach Bruce Arians was short when asked about the incident. “Brown is no longer a member of the Bucs,” he said. “Let’s talk about the guys that won the game.”
There was speculation that Brown was asked by Arians to take the field but refused before throwing the tantrum. Brady and other teammates offered words of support after the game to the player who has a recent history of incidents on and off the field. Brown stayed in the New York area and was seen attending the Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays center Monday night. He did not speak with the media.
The misery that has been the New York Jets season comes to a merciful end when they travel to Buffalo to face a Bills team who dominated them 45-17 when they met earlier in the year. With a win, Buffalo can lock up the number 2 or 3 seed in the conference.
