The Brooklyn Nets secured the 7th spot in the NBA’s Eastern Conference without the help of key players.

Playoffs have looked promising for the Nets in recent games as they defeated conference-leading teams. The Nets beat the Los Angeles Clippers in a remarkable 129-120 win last Sunday evening at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

The NBA season was suspended March 11th due to COVID-19. Games resumed in an eight seeding game series July 30th in Orlando. The Nets have achieved surprising success as they defeated teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, who are in first place in the Eastern Conference and the Los Angeles Clippers, who are in second place in the Western Conference.

The Nets have been without leading scorers like Kevin Durant, who has been recovering from Achilles tendon surgery and Kyrie Irving, who had shoulder surgery in March ending his season. Other key players Spencer Dinwiddie and DeAndre Jordan opted out of playing in Orlando.

Sunday’s game was an unexpected thriller. The Nets starting lineup included Caris LeVert, Garrett Temple, Joe Harris, Rodions Kurucs and Jarrett Allen.  The Nets were ahead by 21 points at the end of the first quarter, led 74-63 at half time, maintained their lead and ended third quarter 98-94.

LeVert and Harris were team leaders in overall points. LeVert had 27 points, while Harris had 25 points. LeVert also led the team in 13 assists.  Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 39 points and 6 assists.

The Nets conclude the regular season tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers before the playoffs begin. The Nets defeated the Trail Blazers 119-115 in November. Brooklyn parted ways with head coach Kenny Atkinson in March. He was replaced by Jacque Vaughn.
