Taofeek Abijako, at 19, was the youngest designer to show in New York’s recent men’s shows. His design company, Head of State+, focuses on fashion, art, and product designs, among other things. He believes in furthering his philosophy of thoughtful, clear, and honest designs. His work combines minimalist street wear with political and social commentary and insights.
Abijako said, “Head of State+ is less of a brand and more of a case study. It’s me digging into my cultural upbringing while trying to have a firm grasp and understanding.” Another young artist featured in Men’s Fashion Week was Romeo Hunte, a brand focused on making strong statements through outerwear. Hunte’s vision is to create moder apparel that is practical and transitional, while still being luxurious. His women’s wear collections also include unisex pieces, and have been highly praised for balancing femininity and masculinity.
These young black artists are doing a job only they can do, and creating modern pieces that are multi-functional, and make statements about the world and society.
