When superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers was lost for the year in the Jets first offensive series of the season, 2021 number two overall draft pick Zach Wilson was given the opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the Jets again, something many thought would never happen because of his poor play through his first two seasons. Instead, the organization put their trust in him and it could end up being the undoing for them all.

After completing 7 of 15 passes for a touchdown and an interception on Sunday in Buffalo against the Bills Wilson received what many in New York have been calling on for weeks, a benching in the second half. The Jets gave backup journeyman Tim Boyle a chance to quarterback the team, but the game was already a lost cause at that point as they trailed 16-6 at halftime and would not score again in a 32-6 Buffalo win. The Jets are now 4-6 with their playoff chances dwindling. They announced that Wilson will remain benched for the team’s Black Friday game against Miami at MetLife Stadium and Boyle will make the start. Wilson has a 20-31 record, 21 touchdowns and 25 interceptions as Jets starting quarterback.

Head coach Robert Saleh talked about the decision to bench Wilson. “We finished the first half strong,” he began. “I really thought we’d come out better in the second half. It was one of those deals where it’s 29-6 and felt like we needed to do something.” Wilson will remain on the active list as the third string backup quarterback. As for Wilson’s future with the Jets Saleh said, “we’ll address that in the off season. You never know what’s going to happen in the course of the next 6 to 8 games.”

The New York Jets have a must win game Sunday before hosting the Atlanta Falcons on December 3rd. After that, they have two more division games against Miami and New England. Rumors have been circulating that Rodgers will practice with the team in early December. If Gang Green is out of playoff contention, it would make no sense to play him.
