A portrait of a smiling Dr. Ben Carson used to hang in the hallway of the Archbishop Borders School in Baltimore, welcoming children and parents to the school. “The person who has the most to do with your success is you,” it reads.

That was before Carson’s presidential bid, and before he withdrew from the race and proceeded to endorse Donald Trump. It was before he worked for and openly supported a president who has failed to condemn white supremacists over and over again. It was also before Carson tried to push policies that many say reverse some civil rights protections for those living in subsidized housing.

Principal Alicia Freeman took it down, because she says Carson’s message feels hostile now. “He was starting to become offensive.”
