Tampa, Fla.- On a cool Monday night in Tampa, Saquan Barkley was in the starting line-up for the first time since October 10th when he went down with a high ankle sprain. Representing the team for the coin toss, Barkley called heads, winning the toss. The Giants deferred to Tampa Bay and elected to kick. Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, having lost his last two games, made the Giants defense pay immediately. 73 yards and 8 plays later, Brady tosses a 14-yard touchdown to wide receiver Chris Godwin.
The New York Football Giants were coming off a bye week after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs on the road. A game they clearly could have won. Quarterback Daniel Jones would get the team on the board the very first time they had the ball. Unfortunately, after moving the team deep in the Bucs, Jones could not convert several third down opportunities. Graham Gano kicks a 37-yard field goal cutting the lead to 7-3. Tampa extended their lead (10-3) with another long drive (19 plays, 79 yards) as Ryan Succop kicks a 25-yard field goal. The Giants defense stepped up the next time Brady had the ball. From their own 15, Brady looks for wide receiver Mike Evans. The pass goes through his hands and is intercepted by cornerback Adoree Jackson who returns it to the Patriots 5-yard line. Three plays later, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas checks in as an eligible receiver and catches the 5-yard touchdown pass from Jones tying the game at 10. It was the last points the Giants would put on the board.

In extending their lead to 17-10 before halftime, Ronald Jones runs it in from 6-yards out, the Bucs offense produced 51 plays to the Giants 34. When the Giants got the ball to start the third quarter, they would punt after 12 plays. Brady (30-46, 307 yards, 2 td’s, 1 int) wasted no time increasing the lead to 24-10 after finding wide receiver Mike Evans for the 5-yard touchdown reception. As he has done in career, Jones looks for tight end Chris Myarick only to get picked off by nose tackle Steve McLendon. The defense allows two more field goals but the offense could not get in the end zone. Said Jones, (23-38, 167 yards, 1 td, 2 int’s) of the inept offense, “we certainly didn’t execute, didn’t do what we planned to do. Wasn’t to much good.” “He” is offensive coordinator Jason Garrett who has to be feeling the heat, especially after what second year head coach said. “We got to many good players to be scoring so few point,” he began. “It is fairly evident the offensive brain trust is not going to get out of this unscathed.” Ouch! Late Tuesday afternoon, the Giants announced they have fired offensive coordinator Garrett. In only his second year as OC, Garrett’s offense was 31st in his first year. This year, they averaged 18.9 points per game, ranking them 25th.
Barkley ( 6 carries, 25 yards, 6 catches 31 yards) was not a factor in any part of the offense as the Bucs defense smothered him every time he touched the ball. “It’s a little frustrating to have to sit out again and come back and feel like how l was in week 1,” he said of his performance.
The last place New York Giants host hated division rival Philadelphia Eagles Sunday at 1pm. The Eagles are coming off a win against the New Orleans Saints 40-29. Quarterback Jalen Hurts became the first Eagles QB to rush for 3 touchdowns in a game. After the Eagles watched the Giants performance Monday night, they have to be drooling looking to stay in the hunt in the division as the Dallas Cowboys lost to Kansas City.
