When the first place New York Mets, (that’s right, first place) began a three-game series Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals they had won 6 of their previous 9 games. Their record was 12-5 winning 5 of 7 home games and 6 of 9 on the road.

They sent Max Scherzer to the mound and he continued his early season excellence throwing 7 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out 10 not giving up a run. Unfortunately, for the first 8 innings the Mets bats were silent as Scherzer would not get the decision.

After the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead Mets reliever Trevor May came in to start the eighth. May loaded the bases and gave up a 2-run single to Tyler O’ Neil. The way the Mets swinging, it looked like those runs would hold up. Then came the ninth inning.

With the help of sloppy St. Louis defense, the Mets rallied for 5 runs stunning the Cardinals in the 5-2 come from behind win. Said first year manager Buck Showalter of the win when it looked like they would drop the opening game, “these are games you can kind of reach back for and kind of remember why you do all this.”

The Metropolitans finished the series Wednesday night before coming home Friday where they will face division rival Philadelphia Phillies for 3 games.

Scherzer and Buckwalter have the Mets going in the right direction.
