*A white couple from South Carolina is accused of torturing their 10-year-old foster child from Uganda.
The couple had been living in Uganda where they worked in the Kampala area since 2017 after moving there to do humanitarian work. Nicholas and Mackenzie Spencer, both 32, now face the death penalty after being accused of physical and emotional abuse of their 10-year-old foster son Kayima John. The couple also allegedly engaged in child trafficking, Reuters reports.
The Spencers took in three foster children from a local Christian ministry in 2018, according to PEOPLE.
Ugandan police said in a statement that the couple allegedly kept Kayima John “barefoot and naked throughout the day,” and would sometimes force him to “squat in an awkward position.”
