It was a rough weekend in the Bronx as the Yankees dropped two of three to the Giants, marking San Francisco’s first-ever series win at Yankee Stadium.
Friday’s opener was a disaster from the start. Marcus Stroman couldn’t escape the first inning, surrendering five runs before being pulled. Jung Hoo Lee’s three-run homer and LaMonte Wade Jr.’s two-run double set the tone for San Fran. The game was called after five innings due to rain, resulting in a blowout 9-1 loss for the Bombers.
Saturday offered a glimmer of hope. Rookie Will Warren earned his first major league win, allowing two runs over five innings. The offense exploded in the fifth, with Cody Bellinger delivering a go-ahead RBI single in a five-run frame. That surge proved decisive, as the Yankees rolled on to a 8-4 victory.
Sunday’s rubber match saw the Yankees take an early 3-0 lead, but Carlos Rodón faltered in the sixth, giving up a three-run homer to Lee—his second of the game. Despite Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s solo shot in the eighth, the Yankees fell 5-4, dropping the series.
In the series opener against the Royals on Monday, Carlos Carrasco held the Royals to one run over five innings, striking out four with a 50% whiff rate on his changeup. The Yankees broke a 1–1 tie in the fifth with home runs from Trent Grisham, Ben Rice, and Austin Wells, all in the same inning, powering a 4–1 win. The bullpen extended its scoreless streak to 11⅓ innings.
Yankees captain Aaron Judge, who will also lead Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, has gone homerless in his last nine games—despite hitting .355 with seven RBIs during that stretch. After what may be the greatest start to a season in MLB history, it’s a testament to his greatness that a nine-game home run drought even stands out.
The Yankees now sit at 9-7, looking to build momentum as they continue their homestand after a back-and-forth start to the season.
