The University of Florida have won their third men’s national championship with a 65-63 win over the University of Houston Monday night in San Antonio, Texas. Both teams were #1 seeds in the tournament and Houston was in the championship game for the first time since they lost back-to-back years in the championship game in 1983 and 1984, when they had Hakeem Olajuwon.
Florida came back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to capture the title. “I feel like it just goes back to how connected we are as a team. I feel like we don’t have any quit,” Florida’s Will Richard said after scoring a team high 18 points for the Gators. “I feel like as long as there is time on the clock, we are going to give ourselves a good chance to win as long as we just stay the course, keep taking it possession by possession. So, I just like our resiliency and how we fought through adversity throughout the game.”
At 39 years old Florida’s Head Coach Todd Golden becomes the youngest head coach to win a national championship since Jim Valvano in 1983 when his North Carolina State team also beat Houston in the championship game.
