The New York Liberty lost 95-93 in overtime against the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday for Game 1 of the WNBA finals.

The team knew the importance of a home win, but were optimistic about the series. New York fell behind in the fourth quarter after leading the majority of the game as the Lynx pushed ahead into overtime and came away with the road win at Barclays Center.

“We were up a lot, then we had a wild kind of sequence to end the fourth,” said Breanna Stewart. “I had a great look at the end and I didn’t make it, but I think that this is a series and we wanted to really win obviously for home court. But the beauty is, we have another game on Sunday and we’ll be ready.”

New York led 32-19 at the end of the first quarter, were ahead 44-36 at halftime and 68-61 by the end of the third quarter, but the Minnesota Lynx outscored them 17-12 in the second quarter and 25-24 in the third quarter.

Stewart was fouled with less than a second in the fourth and went to the free throw line to shoot two. She made the first shot and missed the second shot before the game went into overtime.

Jonquel Jones led New York with 24 points and 10 rebounds, Sabrina Ionescu added 19 points and five rebounds and Stewart added 18 points and nine rebounds. Leonie Fiebich set a WNBA record for most three-pointers made by a rookie in a single WNBA Finals game with her fifth 3-pointer of the game against Minnesota.

“We had a great first quarter and they lifted up the energy,” said Coach Sandy Brondello. “They out-hustled us.”

She said the Lynx executed better and made timely shots. New York and Minnesota moved ahead for Game 2 in Brooklyn on Sunday.
