Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, has accused federal agents of orchestrating a smear campaign against him, claiming the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leaked a damaging 2016 video. The video, which shows Combs assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, emerged in May and sparked widespread media attention. His legal team asserts that the leak was a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation as he faces serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The footage has significantly harmed his public image, complicating his efforts to defend himself.
In addition to the leaked video, Combs’ defense attorneys have accused federal authorities of spreading false information and grand jury materials to media outlets. They have stressed that their anger is directed at the DHS, not the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office, amid the growing media frenzy surrounding the case. Combs’ attorneys claim these actions are part of a broader conspiracy to undermine their client in the lead-up to a highly anticipated trial.
In a court filing, Combs’ legal team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, outlined how DHS agents had allegedly conspired for months to damage their client’s standing. According to them, the video was released with one goal: to sabotage Combs’ defense and prevent him from successfully contesting the charges against him. “The videotape was leaked to CNN for one reason alone: to mortally wound the reputation and the prospect of Sean Combs successfully defending himself against these allegations,” the filing states.
This comes after a brief legal dispute between Combs and Ventura in November of the previous year, which was quickly resolved through a settlement. However, the current accusations cast a darker shadow over Combs, who is being portrayed as having a history of abusing women and allegedly using his music label as a front for criminal activities for over a decade. Combs, who has pleaded not guilty, remains in federal detention while his legal team works to secure his release in preparation for the trial.
