The Indiana Pacers gave all the momentum back that they gained in a 32-point blowout over the Knicks Sunday afternoon in Game 4, by having the tables turned on them in Game 5 at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night. They were outscored in every quarter and trailed by as many as 31 points, as they lost 121-91. They now trail the Knicks 3-2 in the best of seven game series with Game 6 in Indiana Friday night.
For the Knicks Jalen Brunson scored 44 points, Josh Hart scored 18 points, Deuce McBride got the start and provided 17 points, and Alec Burks had another solid game off the bench scoring 18. The Knicks outrebounded Indiana 53-29, including 20 to 5 on the offensive glass. “A very poor effort obviously,” Pacers Head Coach Rick Carlisle said of his team after the game. “Annihilated on loose balls and rebounds, we all own it, but very embarrassing, very embarrassing.”
After scoring 34, 35, and 20 points over the last three games Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton had just 13 points in Game Five. “I think just, momentum shifted, they killed us on the glass better than they probably have any game all series,” Haliburton said after the game. “We just didn’t match that intensity level all night. We cut it to seven early in the second half, got some momentum going, but they answered right back. We just have to do a better job of limiting second chance opportunities.”
When Indiana big man Myles Turner hit a third straight three two minutes and four seconds into the second half, Knicks Head Coach Tom Thibodeau called a timeout. The Knicks responded with a 19-1 run from that point on to lift their lead back up to 25. Indiana is 5-0 at home in the playoffs and they hope to lean on that in a win or go home Game 6 Friday night.
