The New York Liberty put together a superstar trio before the beginning of this season which consisted of two former MVP’s and the first overall pick of the 2020 WNBA draft. They were brought together to bring the Liberty their first championship in franchise history. But if things don’t change drastically the Liberty’s first appearance in the WNBA Finals in 21 years will go down in flames.
Their opponent the Las Vegas Aces are up 2-0 after the first two games of the series played in Vegas. This is only a best of five game series so the Liberty will have to win three straight games to get off the snide of being the only original WNBA franchise still in the league who has never won a championship. The Liberty lost in the WNBA Finals four of the first six seasons of the league.
The difference so far in this series has been the dominant play of the Vegas guards over the Liberty guards. The 2023 league MVP, the Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, has been outplayed by the Aces A’ja Wilson who finished second in the MVP voting.
Coming into this series Stewart was 6-0 in championship rounds dating back to four championship games in college and two WNBA Championships. Game 3 is Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn and game 4 the following Wednesday.
