According to plaintiffs in a class-action complaint filed against Google in California this week, the firm fosters a work atmosphere that marginalizes Black employees, denies people of color promotion chances, and dismisses sexual harassment reports, among other infractions.
Attorney Ben Crump and two former employees of the search engine behemoth revealed what they called a “racist culture” at the Mountain View, California-based company at a press conference in San Francisco on Monday.

“These women tried to ring the alarm, tried to raise awareness about the discriminatory and bigoted culture,” Crump explained. “And Google did not retaliate against the racist culture. Google retaliated against the victims of the racist culture.”
April Curley, a former diversity recruiter hired by Google to entice Black workers from historically Black colleges and universities, filed the lawsuit against the company, claiming that she witnessed people of color, including herself, being typecast into jobs with no upward mobility or being passed over entirely during her six-year tenure. She was not promoted during her time at Google, from 2014 to 2020, despite bringing in 500 Black young professionals, she alleged.
Worse, she claims in her case that there was a widespread practice of racial bias, that Black persons were not “Googly” enough — that is, they did not fit the culture — and that her concerns were ignored when she discussed them with superiors. Instead, she stated that she was terminated in 2020.
