Well, at least they scored a touchdown. The pathetic season that was the New York Giants, came to a merciful end when they lost to the Washington Football Team 22-7 last Sunday at MetLife Stadium. It was the first time Washington swept both games since 2011.

Jury Is Out On Judge

The fallout from the embarrassing season began Monday afternoon when General Manager Dave Gettleman announced his retirement (wink, wink) as the team only won 19 games in 4 years under his guidance. Gettleman drafted Saquon Barkley with the #2 pick in 2018. Fans shook their heads a year later when he drafted Daniel Jones with the #6 pick when he clearly would have been available as the team had the 16th pick. Gettleman’s biggest critics pointed out the fact he failed to upgrade the offensive line which had Jones running for his life for the 3 years he was behind center. Jones had injuries in each year which led him to miss games. This year, Jones was put on the injured reserved list and missed the last six games of the year with a neck injury.

As of this past Tuesday, second year head coach Joe Judge still had a job with all indications pointing to his return. It will be hard to justify his return. The organization can point to injuries and Covid issue as a big reasons for their season. Other teams dealt with the same issues and overcame them.

Saying their offense was inept is an understatement. At one point the Giants that failed to score a touchdown in 44 straight possessions. The streak ended when third string quarterback Jake Fromm connected with wide receiver Darius Slayton on a 22 yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Prior to that over the previous 6 games, the offense was putrid. Check out these stats: They averaged 9.3 points per game. Only scored double digits in 2 of the 6 games. 5 straight multi turnover games, 16 overall. Threw for only 117 yards per game and did not surpass 200 yards in any of those games. 4 touchdown passes (including the one yesterday). 11 interceptions. Completed only 50% of their passes.

All of this after firing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-10. The defense wasn’t much better. See these stats before the game against Washington: 31st in giving up yards 6,032. 31st giving up 416 points. 24th giving up 2,193 rushing yards and 31st in giving up 4,044 passing yards.

Clearly, work has to be done on both sides of the ball. It begins from the top. Whatever they decide on Judge, they need to hire a general manager with a proven track record. They must decide if they want to bring back Jones or get a quality, veteran quarterback, The New York Beacon conducted an informal Facebook poll asking Giants fans if the team should bring back Judge. The overwhelming response was a resounding NO!

Since the New York “Football” Giants won their last Super Bowl, they have lost 100 games averaging 10 losses a year. The near future is not looking good for Big Blue.
