The extra push in the second half of the game Sunday, after a slow start, wasn’t enough for the New York Jets, who were defeated 27-20 by the Atlanta Falcons in London, England.

The Jets’ scoring, energy and effort amplified after halftime and tying the game was a possibility in the 4th quarter, but a quarterback sack, missed opportunities, penalties and the dwindling time led to the loss at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Jets now plan to use the bye week to access what changes are necessary and how they can bring the intensity from the third and fourth quarters earlier into games.

“I’m going to work my tail off over this bye week and see if there’s something that we can come up with,” said first year head Coach Robert Saleh in the press conference after the game. “Study the tape. Look at all the decisions and execution and figure out what the answer is over this next week and come up with something, because it’s got to be better.”

Saleh did not feel the long journey across the pond affected the defense, but said he wanted to re-examine the penalties. Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams received the first penalty for roughing the passer in the first quarter. “He’s obviously full speed trying to get to a guy before he throws the ball, and when he lands, he’s trying to roll up,” said Saleh. “You can see it go off, so as of now, I disagree with the call but we’ll see when we get to the tape.”

New York had 44 total tackles and zero recorded sacks. Cornerback Brandin Echols led defense with seven tackles and two assists. The Falcons defense had 33 total tackles and sacked first year Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.

The Falcons were the first on the scoreboard with a field goal. The Jets defense stopped them short of the goal. However, Atlanta quickly took advantage of the lead and scored a touchdown before the end of the first quarter. Atlanta scored another touchdown at the beginning of second quarter and then intercepted Wilson’s pass intended for wide receiver Keelan Cole on the Jet’s next possession. Jets defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd also received a penalty for roughing the passer in the second quarter. The Jets managed to get on the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal by Matt Ammendola and trailed 20-3 at half time. New York improved in the third quarter. Wilson worked his way down the field with passes and then handed the ball to running back Ty Johnson who pushed through the middle for a 1-yard touchdown with Ammendola missing the extra point.

The Jets added another touchdown in the fourth quarter. Wilson handing the ball of torunning back Michael Carter who pushed his way 2-yards to end zone. The two-point conversion attempt was successful as Wilson passed to wide receiver Jamison Crowder.  The Jets had another chance to score, but Wilson was sacked and had several incomplete passes. Ammendola kicked a 49-yard field goal when Jets were unable to make the first down on their last possession with about 22 seconds remaining before the game ended.

Wilson completed 19 of 32 passes for 192-yards and had one intercepted pass. “It’s interesting, in the second half, right, every single game, we have looked really good and we know what we’re capable of and we were able to show it there at the end,” Wilson said. “I just think we have to get a good rhythm going, some flow.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 33 of 45 passes for 342-yards who took out the Giants at MetLife Stadium earlier this year.

Saleh also felt more consistency was needed. “Again, he shows that he’s pretty good when he gets into a rhythm, but again we have to start faster and I’m putting that on me to try to figure this out over the next week,” he said.

The Jets next take on the Patriots October 24th and hope to redeem themselves after a 25-6 loss and a now have a 1-5 record.
