The last three games the Dallas Cowboys played exposed their defense as they gave up 39 points to Atlanta, 38 to Seattle and a whopping 49 to Cleveland. So, things looked good for the New York Football Giants when they jumped out to a 17-3 first quarter lead, it looked like they would be the first New York team (not counting Buffalo) to put a “W” in the win column.
Dallas won the toss and got on the board first after a 24-yard Greg Zuerlein field goal. Big Blue responded the first time they touched the ball going 70 yards in 7 plays ending in a 3 yards touchdown run by tight end Evan Engram. The Giants defense would step up the second time Dallas got the ball as linebacker Kyler Frackrell steps in front of a Dak Prescott pass intended for running back Ezikiel Elliott and returns it 46 yards to extend the lead to 14-3. Dallas continued to struggle, going 3 and out with the Giants putting 3 more points on the board after a Graham Gano boomed a 55-yard field goal.
The second quarter was all Dallas as Elliott runs in from 1-yard (17-10) out as Prescott moves them 70 yards in 14 plays as Elliott gained 44 of those yards on the ground. As it has become expected week after week, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones would turn the ball over. This time fumbling after getting hit by defensive end Demarcus Lawrence. Cornerback Antonio Brown scoops it up and runs it 29-yards to tie the score at 17. Gano added a 50-yard field goal, giving them a brief lead (20-17).
Dallas would go into their bag of tricks for their next touchdown. Marching down to the New York 11, Prescott from the shotgun, hands the ball off to Elliott who then pitches it to wide receiver Cedrick Wilson. Prescott runs out of the backfield to catch the 11 yards touchdown pass. Graham added another field goal (28-yards) cutting the lead to 24-23 when Prescott would see his season come to an end after a gruesome leg injury. With minutes left in the third quarter, Dak scrambles for a 9-yard gain when he is dragged down from behind by defensive back Logan Ryan. Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle that required surgery Sunday night.
Back-up and veteran quarterback Andy Dalton got them into the end zone (12 plays, 79 yards) as Elliott busted up the middle for a 12 yards touchdown run. Now down 31-23, the Giants would go ahead after Gano connects on a 28-yard field goal and 4-yard touchdown run by Devonte Freeman. Zuerlein tied the game with a 40-yard field goal but Jones could not respond giving the Cowboys back after 5-plays with :52 seconds left. Dalton completed 3 passes 72 yards before G Zuerlein sealed the win with a 34-yard field goal as time expired.
Said Jones, “obviously divisional games are big game. It’s disappointing to lose but we don’t feel like we’re out of the division at all. We got a couple of big division games coming up. All we can do is prepare.”
Head coach Joe Judge commented on the injury to Dak Prescott. “All our thoughts and prayers are with Dak Prescott, he began. i have a tremendous amount of respect for as a player, even more as a person. You don’t want to see anybody get hurt. Obviously, it was a bad looking injury. We hope for the best recovery he could have.”
The New York Giants host Washington Sunday before traveling to Philadelphia. They are looking for one win against any team. The Washington Football Team would be a good start.
