There was a revolving door leading to the New York Yankees training room all season. Despite that, the “next man up” mentality came into effect as the team went on to win 103 games and the division. The starting pitching had more question marks than on the Jokers costume. They faced the Minnesota Twin in the first round of the ALDS taking care of business winning the first two games in the Bronx. Closing out the series on the road would not be easy. It was. Arguably their best starter Luis Severino, who only pitched in 3 games all year, showed he can be a force in the postseason. He only lasted 4 innings but did not give up a run. He wiggled out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the second inning not surrendering a run. The bullpen picked up the slack only giving up 1 run in the 5-1 clinching win.
The defense was solid as the Twins looked to get back in the game with Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius come up with clutch catches. Gleyber Torres did it at bat and on the field hitting a home run in the second inning. In the fifth inning the Twins have runners on and two outs. Torres slides to stop the ground ball from going into right field. He spins and fires the ball to first base ending the inning and keeping Minnesota off the board.
The time off will give the rotation much needed rest as they await to see who they play. The Astros led their series 2-1 against Tampa Bay and looked to close out the series this past Tuesday. If they do, they will host the Yankees in game 1 of the ALCS. It would be the second time in three year they will have faced each other with Houston winning the series in 7 games – the last two on their home field.
