The “Unite the Right” rally of last year was a dangerous gathering of Neo-nazis, KKK members, and their supporters in Charlottesville. This year, on it’s second anniversary, counter-protestors won the day. The white nationalist event ended early when only a few people showed up to hear the speeches of the day, many of which went unheard because of protestors chanting.

The protesters were packed tight against the barricades, and shouted “Nazi’s aren’t welcome!” and “No hate! No KKK! No fascist USA!” It started to rain during the rally, which didn’t deter protestors. They even set up their own stage with speakers to overpower the speakers from Unite the Right. An organizer of the event, Jason Kessler, said “This sent about racism. This is about free speech.” Regardless, the attempted rally ended early and the white nationalists left in vans, escorted by the police.

This is an example of protesting effectively and nonviolently. Last year’s rally was a deadly event, and this year protestors kept the event short, and avoided the violence and chaos that comes along with a gathering of Neo-nazis and white nationalists.
