Recently America’s been under fire for its controversial family separation policy. This policy entails separating children from their parents as soon as they arrive at the border between Mexico and the United States.

According to Newsweek, as of Tuesday, The United Nations on Tuesday urged President Trump to put an ‘immediate halt’ to his controversial policy.

This policy also applies to families who have crossed the border legally to seek asylum.

“Children should never be detained for reasons related to their own parents’ migration status,” said U.N. human rights office representative Ravina Shamdasani. “Detention is never in the best interests of the child and always constitutes a child rights violation.”

Trump has twice tried to deflect criticism. Trump has claimed on twitter that the policy “is the fault of bad legislation passed by the Democrats.” Family separation isn’t actually required by the law and was only recently instituted by the Trump administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently said “If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over the border.” Sessions continues to defend the policy despite Trump’s attempt to distance himself from the policy.
