With Veterans’ Day having recently passed, Face2FaceAfrica has shed some light on a group of veterans that have forgotten to history by many, the first all-black female battalion to serve in Europe during WWII.

This would never have come to pass if not for the work of Mary McLeod Bethune, an African American civil rights activist. At the time, she appealed to then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to try and create more meaningful roles for black women in the Army to try and help balance out a shortage of soldiers.  In 1942, the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps was formed, and women of all races were allowed to serve in the war officially. Shortly afterward, the Auxillary designation would be removed, and the women would get full military benefits.
