Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones s receiving backlash from players for forcing his team to stand during the national anthem, amid tidal waves of player protests. In May, the league said players could be penalized financially for kneeling during the anthem, but wouldn’t if they simply stayed in the locker rooms.

Jones made his own rules, saying that every member of his team would be on the field for the anthem and stand “toe on the line.” When asked about Jones’ policy, SF 49er’s player Richard Sherman said, “The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, with the old plantation mentality.” Sherman wants the league to focus on why the players are protesting, though he is glad there is a real conversation going on about these protests. “They’re having conversations, that’s awesome. But there are unintended consequences. If they did this to appease people, they didn’t appease anyone. It’s like putting a band-aid over a broken leg.”
