The sign in Mississippi dedicated to Emmett Till, a well-known Lynch victim in the 1950’s, has been vandalized again. A month after it was put up in Mississippi it was riddled with bullets, while another sign in the same spot disappeared in 2008. It was replaced in 2013, but taken down recently because it was full of bullet holes.

The third and most recent sign has been vandalized as well. The sign sits in the spot where Till’s body was removed from the Tallahatchie river, badly mangled and hardly recognizable. Till was fourteen, and murdered by two white men, for supposedly whistling at a white woman. The killers were acquitted. The bullet holes in the signs are seen by the community as the attempt of some to erase history.

“For 50 years, our community lived in silence, and theres those who want to erase history, we’ve been through that,” said the co-founder of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center Museum.
