New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker purposely released confidential emails on Tuesday, violating senate rules, but giving the public important information about racial profiling, and the views of supreme court pick Brett Kavanaugh.

“I am going to release the e-mail about racial profiling and I understand that the penalty comes with potential ousting from the Senate,” Booker said on the third day of Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.

Booker released the confidential emails with the backing of Democrats, but drew condemnation from Republicans who disagree with his act of “civil disobedience.” After announcing that he would do so, Booker released 12 pages of emails, which were marked “committee confidential”, online for the public to read. These emails included internal post-9/11 discussions surrounding issues of racial profiling, and other issues.

“I come from a long line, as all of us do as Americans, that understand what that kind of civil disobedience is and I understand the consequences,” Booker said.
